Yao Ababio graduated from then UST in Chemical Engineering in 1984, and works in the Oil & Gas, and Chemicals industries with expertise in process engineering design and project management. A community oriented individual, Yao plays leadership roles in several globally based Ghanaian organizations. Aside the KNUST Alumni Association in North America, he has roles within the Houston Ghanaian community, and the Council of Ewe Associations in North America. amongst others. Dr. Ababio initiated the Mawuli Fund as a US based non-profit organization with registered offices in Ghana, the purpose of which is to seek development aid for secondary education in West Africa.
